Friends of the Artist:
Portraits by Allen Epstein (1941 - 1993)
Frank Patricolo
July 12 - August 22, 2009
Opening Reception
Sunday, July 12, noon - 3 pm
Over the past few years we have been organizing and cataloguing Allen's works and are now launching the first exhibit in over 15 years. We're excited to share with you a selection of portraits from a truly diverse and vibrant body of work. We've chosen pieces that span Allen's career, in a broad range of media and styles.

These varied works hold a common theme. Whether a high-energy pastel or a deeply worked oil, the portraits tell of a penetrating intimacy between the artist and sitter. It is as if Allen imbibed the soul of his subject and then released on paper or canvas a material residue of their character, pressed and worked into shape by his able hand and the clarity and compassion with which he saw them. In each unique piece, deft line, emotive color, gestures and material choices surprise, yet embedded in every impasto or powdery surface is the afterglow of this very personal exchange.

We hope you can join us on July 12 to enjoy this beautiful show and to celebrate the return of Allen’s artwork to the public stage.
